In The Hobbit there has been an ongoing conflict with Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves. Bilbo is a portly person who doesn't really like the thought of adventure and would rather be at his warm home eating. The dwarves on the other hand are all for adventure when it comes to finding their lost treasure. As you can see they are not a very good match. The dawarves think of Bilbo as being a fool and useless and " has been more trouble than use so far" ( 101-102) but Bilbo ( most of the time) thinks kindly of the dwarves. However, in chapter six (101) Bilbo does prove himself to be worthy not only to the dwarves, but to Gandalf. In fact, Balin even admitted that, that was the first time anyone has ever slipped past him (even if Bilbo used Gollum's ring). I think Tolkien does this to make the book amusing. Well many ( or me atleast) thrive on humor. It also gives Bilbo and the dwarves characteristics. So far I have been completely entertained by the dawarves and Bilbo's brawl. I love that you picked this to write about! It is so true that theirs is a love/ hate relationship. One minute they love him, the next they are wishing it was anyone but Bilbo. I agree Tolkien's humor is marvelous, and I am sure that is why I made it through my first fantasy book EVER! ~Mrs. Best
